50th Anniversary Golden Jubilee 1969 - 2019 CELEBRATIONS
The San Fernando Arts Council, the bastion of Southern Arts and Culture and producer of the Annual Junior Arts Festival, (NGC Sanfest), is celebrating its Golden Jubilee this year. 2019.
Founded in 1969, the brainchild of James Lee Wah, the Council had the support over the years of illustrious cultural icons like Torrance Mohammed, Joyce Kirton, Eric Butler, Eugene Joseph, Walid Baksh, Willi Chen, David Sammy, Reynold Bassant, David Banks, among countless others.
The organization has provided a stage for international stars such as Machel Montano, Sherma Andrews, Joanne Foster, Michael Zephyrine, Faye Ali Bocas, Francis Brooks, Vaughnette Bigford, Liam Teague, Shakuntala Ramsingh and many more.
The San Fernando Arts Council (SFAC) boasts of being the only cultural organization to have its own home, the Creative Arts Centre on Circular Road, San Fernando.
The SFAC plans to observe its 50th Anniversary in grand style with special events. The theme for the celebrations is – “San Fernando ArtsCouncil – 50 Years in Arts and Culture – Enriching Lives – Building aNation”.
A series of events is carded as follows:Interfaith Service to be held on Sunday 28th April, 2019 at the St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Harris Promenade, at 5 p.m. All members and well wishers are invited to attend.
Fundraising Bingo is scheduled for Saturday st June, 2019 at the Creative Arts Centre from noon.
A Dinner / Awards Ceremony / Dance is planned for Saturday 28thSeptember, 2019 in honour of ten (10) of our cultural heroes. Saturday 16th November, 2019, a Concert featuring the works of the groups of our cultural Icons will be staged.
Pieces choreographed by Torrance Mohammed, Joyce Kirton, Eugene Joseph, Indira Mahatoo, Eric Butler, Michael Salickram and excerpts of Drama from James Lee Wah and Walid Baksh will be recreated.
An Arts / Crafts exhibition showcasing the work of our Southern artists / craftsmen is to be held in July. Date to be announced.
Writers are invited to submit new original one act plays in a playwriting contest. Plays must be based on a local theme and include at least two local songs and two dances, which must be related to the theme / plot.
Deadline for submission of two typewritten copies to the Creative Arts Centre is 31st August, 2019.All members past and present are invited to be a part of this momentous occasion.
