In remembrance of Joyce Kirton.
March 1st 1932 - 26th February 2020
The San Fernando Arts Council extends its heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the late Ms. Joyce Kirton, Artistic Director of the Les Enfants Dance Company.
Ms. Kirton’s interest in dance began in her teens. She was influenced by Beryl McBurnie, The Holder Brothers and by the Hollywood Musical of the fifties and sixties.
Ms. Kirton was a foundation member of the Arawaks Dance Group in San Fernando and the Group’s first Secretary. She was also a founding member of the San Fernando Arts Council where she served a short stint as Chairperson and had the distinction of being the first Director of the National Junior Arts Festival (Sanfest) in 1970, where she distinguished herself as a visionary leader.
Ms. Kirton, even though she was physically incapacitated in the latter stage of her career, continued to direct her Dance Group and assist in choreography. She always did her endeavor best to promote the Culture of Trinidad and Tobago and showed a passion to pass on her knowledge of the Arts to the Youth of the Nation. She was convinced that an effectively delivered programme of Dance in schools can influence behavior in a positive way.
Even though we are saddened by her passing, we have been fortunate to have known her and we appreciate the impact that she made on the lives of so many persons.
May fond memories of Ms. Kirton bring comfort to her family during this time of loss.#joycekirton #lesenfantsdancecompany
